Question 1

How much does TMS cost in Massachusetts?

Accepted Answer

Cost depends on the clinic, the protocol it runs, and whether your insurer has authorised the course. The cash price and the authorised price are very different numbers, so ask each clinic for the per-session rate and the total course estimate in writing before you start. Our guide to what TMS costs explains how the pricing works.

Question 2

Does insurance cover TMS in Massachusetts?

Accepted Answer

Most commercial insurers, Medicare, and many Medicare Advantage plans cover TMS for major depressive disorder when prior treatments haven't worked. Insurers typically want documentation of at least two antidepressant trials at an adequate dose and duration, often plus psychotherapy. Coverage and prior-authorisation rules still vary by plan, so confirm with both the clinic and your insurer before you start.

Question 3

Do I need a referral to start TMS?

Accepted Answer

Nearly every clinic here requires a psychiatric evaluation before the first session, and most will not put you on the schedule until your insurer has authorised the course. Gathering that paperwork is usually the slowest part. Call the clinic first — many handle the referral and prior-authorisation path for you.

Question 4

How do I choose between clinics?

Accepted Answer

Start with travel time — TMS is usually five days a week for four to six weeks, so a clinic you can reach without rearranging your whole day matters more than a slightly higher rating. Read recent reviews for how the clinic handles insurance and scheduling, then call two or three and ask which protocol they run, whether they are taking new patients, and what a cash-pay course would cost. A listing on this page is not a recommendation.

Question 5

What if there is no TMS clinic in my city?

Accepted Answer

Most people travel to the nearest city in Massachusetts that has a listing. TMS is an outpatient treatment with no sedation, so patients typically drive themselves. Use the city list on this page to find the closest option, then call ahead to confirm they are taking new patients.
