My experience at Sheppard Pratt was incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I went there during one of the most hardest moments of my life, expecting support, and real help. The lack of clear communication made everything worse. When you’re struggling so bad mentally, the last thing you need is to feel unheard or misunderstood but it’s something I felt often by the staff. During a staff talk I mention my urges to self- harm which I had previously done in the bathroom the staff made a joke out of it stating “let me see your playing face, let me see your joking face because I think your lying”. I think Basic empathy and support should not be optional in a mental health hospital. Fights happened everyday in the waterfall unit, which staff didn’t seem prepared or looked like they didn’t know how to break up the fight instead they called for a code green every time. Sleeping in those rooms were hard not only because of the rooms there self but you can often hear staff talking right outside your door or staff yelling “call the code green” for patients not sleeping and coming out of there rooms. And dong get me started on the food, 2/10… the cleanliness of the rooms and bathroom was lacked and I often saw bloody pads laying around with dirty underwear. I got accused of doing something inappropriate with another patient when another patient went and told on us for something we didn’t do and instead of taking the time to review cameras and hear our story they instead believed the other mentally ill patient side, which we were than put on a 10 foot. Most days consisted of lock downs which is where we stay in our rooms and it was the worst if you didn’t have a roommate in your room, you would be bored out of your mind. The white walls, and small bed in a big room is all you have to entertain yourself. I understand that hospitals are busy but that doesn’t excuse making patients feel invisible. You signed up for the job, work to the expectation that you signed up for. Mental health care requires patience, compassion, and genuine human support and that was not consistently my experience here. I hope serious changes are made so others don’t leave feeling more frustrated than supported.

The staff here is only worried with the staff safety and experience. If a patient is a danger sexually, physically and verbally abusive to other patients Consistently, it does not matter. Only when that behavior is directed toward a staff member Is when there are threats of premature discharge. Outside of that, patients are told “ We do not have enough staff to guarantee your safety. Just run, there is nothing we can do about it." Despite our documented and signed human right to be guaranteed a safe mental and physical environment in order in which to heal in. Patient rights were just ideal suggestions for staff .Please listen to all the one star review. I have never been in a predicament like this in my life. It felt like I was in a movie. Not because of the patients, but because of the staff. I found more comfort and care in other patients than I did in a drip of the staff. I was in here for an entire month and had to call Patient advocacy over 12 times in order for them to finally take us outside to get some fresh air during the summer. I had to threaten with legal action in order to receive care as a patient and not a prisoner. Even the groups were lazy and as minimal effort as possible until I had called Patient advocacy enough for upper management to finally come down and see what was going on. The head nurse was fired, we were taking outside a second time and suddenly the staff acted frightened and confused as if they had never experienced accountability before and were terrified for their jobs. This is a playground for bullies to pick on the mentally ill. I admitted myself, and I will never do so ever again. Please don’t come here, you have been warned. You will leave with trauma and I pray that none of you ever have to experience that. It’s the worst place to be. It makes me want to mask any psychiatric need I will ever have again and hide my need for help in order to prevent any chances of encountering this holistic nightmare.

Do not go here if you're depressed. The staff does not care at all. They will try to keep you there longer if you show an ounce of emotion. I don't even remember a single thing that made me feel better in that unit. What I DO remember is a staff member saying that they hate the kids! We would also miss out on movies if we talked during it. The only reason this place is still running is because of the money they get. The food is either nasty as hell or tastes like nothing. The staff is neglectful and should not be working in psych. It's clear that they do not know how to handle the mentally ill. And I got the good end of it because I was a good kid. I am 14, I was 12 when I visited. Yet I am still traumatized from how me and other patients were treated.

I called to ask about my mother's whereabouts and gave the phone operator her name. She typed her name in, said she couldn't find her, and then hung up on me. I know she is there because she was specifically discharged to this location. I have never had a phone operator at a medical institution hang up on me. That is completely unacceptable.

My first and last mental “hospital” I will ever go to. I never yelled, fought, or had to be disrespectful just to be heard before I got there. The staff (specifically night staff) were always trying to argue, pick, and bother every patient there. When someone was crying or not being able to control themselves the staff sat there and watched before trying to suggest their medication. If someone was screaming and crying we were told to sit there and leave them be. The only time they cared is if we tried to comfort someone (specifically me). Me and another girl got a ten foot meaning we had to be ten feet away from each other and couldnt speak to each other. I was told we had a ten foot for “inappropriate behavior” but when asked for any proof the doctor said he didnt have any and didnt know why they gave us one. A girl (17) was touching 2 other girls (14 and 13) but we were told they had no proof or any proof that we even told the staff that that happened. Its way more traumatizing things that happened but talking about it hurts me. Dont bring any of your kids there worst place i ever been to.
