About Group Therapy
Group therapy is therapist-led treatment in which a small group — typically 6 to 12 people — meets regularly to work through shared challenges. It's used for substance use recovery, grief, social anxiety, depression, eating disorders, trauma, and many other concerns where peer support amplifies the therapeutic process.
Sessions usually run 60 to 90 minutes weekly. The therapist sets ground rules, guides discussion, and facilitates structured exercises depending on the group's focus. Members share their experiences, listen to others, and learn from the diversity of perspectives in the room. Confidentiality is foundational — what's shared in group stays in group.
Group therapy isn't simply cheaper individual therapy; it's a different modality with distinct benefits. The experience of being heard by peers, witnessing others' progress, and practicing interpersonal skills in real time are unique to the group setting. Many patients use group therapy as a complement to individual therapy or medication, not as a replacement.
